His day to day living was becoming increasingly difficult …

We recently worked with an elderly gentleman who had recently been diagnosed with cancer and who lives alone but with the support of his family.  He was starting to find day to day living increasingly difficult.

His main concern was his daughter who was providing the majority of his care, supporting him with his medication, meals and appointments.  As her dad’s care needs increased, she reduced her hours at work to enable her to support him.

We met with the gentleman to understand his main concerns and together with his daughter we were all able to discuss support services which would meet both of their needs.  We identified his eligibility to receive an Attendance Allowance benefit and the possibility for his daughter to receive Carer’s Allowance.

With appropriate consent, our Facilitator made a referral to Macmillan Welfare Rights who supported them both to apply for the allowances.  His daughter was also signposted to Carers Support and she has since attended the group peer support sessions which she has found invaluable.

She said, “I feel so well supported now and feel I can give my Dad the best care, which is what he deserves.
